tranquil

TRAN'QUIL, a. L. tranquillus. Quiet; calm; undisturbed; peaceful; not agitated. The atmosphere is tranquil. The state is tranquil. A tranquil retirement is desirable; but a tranquil mind is essential to happiness.

tranquilize

TRAN'QUILIZE, v.t. To quiet; to allay when agitated; to compose; to make calm and peaceful; as, to tranquilize a state disturbed by factions or civil commotions; to tranquilize the mind.

Religion haunts the imagination of the sinner, instead of tranquilizing his heart.
