And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: And God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

The first verse of Genesis tells us that God created the heaven and the earth. But the very next verse says that the earth was without form and void. Also darkness was upon the face of the deep.

Did the perfect God, in whom is no darkness at all, create the earth without form and void and covered with darkness? No, it became that way.

Perhaps I'm to simple minded and childlike in faith. But there is a difference between "spiritual" darkness and "physical" darkness. The night time is still in darkness. And the day time is still in light. Of course God did not create any spiritual darkness, there is absolutely no darkness in Him at all. "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5).

But, in my view, the Scripture is written in a perfect and divine order of how things were created.
  1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
  2. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
  3. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good:
  4. And God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.

And so on...
