| Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling |
If you have children in public school, you owe it to yourself to read this book. The bottom line is, a God-less government education system has no business training your kids. God gave you your children to train up, He did not give them to you to hand over to the state for training.
John Taylor Gatto is an award winning educator. He was Teacher of the Year in New York. This book details the problems with any institutionalized education system, and explains how it has replaced a critical role of the FAMILY with a terrible alternative. This is not a Christian book, but it is very relevant to Christians today. Please note that there are several statements made in the book that a Christian will and should disagree with. Still, it is an important book that could change the way you think about schooling. |
| Home Schooling: The Right Choice |
Like so many books written today by neo-fundamentalists, though, this books makes heavy use of the New American Standard version (and occasionally others). Be sure to keep your KJV on hand. This is the only major failing of this book, but doesn't prevent it from being educational and powerful. |
| Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News |
This book is heavily documented and, frankly, incontrovertible. If you always suspected Danny, Tommy, or Sammy were not giving you the whole story, your suspicions will be proven and you'll find that it's even worse than you think. |
| The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation As a Basis for Social Policy |
|
Why do the purveyors of liberalism do what they do? How to they manufacture evidence to get people to go along with them, and how to they brush it aside and continue on even after it is proven wrong? What damage have they caused? This is, at its core, a sociology book. Sowell examines the failed policies of social architects, especially in the last five decades, showing how they have nearly obliterated the family, worsened crime, and caused our education system to become even worse than it was when it started. It is an overall case against political correctness in modern society. Though this is an entirely secular book, I found myself applying Sowell's lessons to modern Christianity. Sowell's keen insight into the minds of the "self-anointed" is very revealing and quite applicable to the bulk of today's elitist Christian scholarship. |
| The Other Side of Calvinism |
|
Basically, I can sum this behemoth up like this: reasons I reject Calvinism. This book is absolutely exhaustive. No stone is unturned in Vance's quest to answer virtually every argument for Calvinism ever presented. Here you will find a thorough history and description of Calvinism, from the mouths of Calvinists themselves such as Arthur Pink, John Gill, and John Calvin himself. 107 pages of footnotes! Each of the five points of Calvinism (TULIP) is dealt with in detail. One of the best chapters is on the fifth point, when vance clearly shows that Perseverance of the Saints is little more than a Calvinist version of non-secure salvation. Vance clearly lays out the BIBLICAL doctrine of ETERNAL SECURITY and shows how Calvinism contradicts it routinely. There are many great Christians in history and even now who are Calvinists. Many of them strongly hold to and defend the KJV and Received Text. However, this book shows the dangers of Calvinism and clearly explains why it is not a system based on sound scriptural doctrine.
